Zaurus Software

Important Note!
All of my software is for the original Sharp Zaurus models (i.e. ZR-3000, ZR-5000, ZR-5000FX, ZR-5700, ZR-5800, ZR-5800FX, etc). My Zaurus software will not run on the new range of Zaurus PDA's that use Linux for their OS (i.e. the SL- family)!

I have written several programs for the Sharp Zaurus PDA using the PILI SDK. To use any of these programs on your Zaurus you must already have the PILI run-time module loaded onto your Zaurus. You can get the latest version of PILI from my PILI page.

Most of these programs are freeware, but a couple are shareware (i.e. you have 30 days to evaluate them and if you don't like them then you should remove them from your Zaurus. If you do like them, then send in the registration fee).

Important Note!
Each of the following files are .BIN files. To download them you should right-click on the link and select "Save Link As..." When the file has downloaded, transfer them to your "PC Files / More" area on your Zaurus and then run them using the PILI main screen. Full instructions and registration info is included inside each program when you run it.

Screen Savers

Want to have look at some pretty patterns and lines bouncing around your Zaurus screen? Check these out!

  • Line Bouncer lets you watch a line bounce around the screen.
  • Mess is like Line Bouncer, except it leaves a trail after it. Quite hypnotic if you watch it for long enough.

Games and Fun Stuff

Time to have some fun with your Zaurus!

Both Zonopoly and Space Mines were winners in the 1997 PILI Programming Competition, with Zonopoly being awarded the "Most Entertaining" award.

  • Zonopoly is a property investment game similar to Monopoly. Buy and sell properties and houses and try to beat the Zaurus before it beats you!
  • Space Mines lets you manage a mining operation. You decide how much to spend on food, when to sell and when to buy. Try to last for 10 years without going bankrupt!
  • Space Mines 50 is the same as Space Mines except you have to last for 50 years - this one is for those people that have mastered the 10 year version of Space Mines and want more of a challenge!
  • Magic 8 Ball is great for people that have trouble making decisions. Just think of your question, tap the screen and all will be revealed! Neat graphics and sound.
  • Zahtzee lets you play Yahtzee on your Zaurus at any time – on the bus, waiting at the airport, whenever and wherever!

Applications

Looking for a particular application? I could have what you're look for!

  • Currency Converter lets you convert money values to and from different currencies.
  • Z-Print lets you hook your Zaurus up to your PC with a serial cable, you can then print from the Zaurus and Z-Print will redirect the printing to your printer on your PC.
  • Zaurus Clipart is a collection of clipart in a Zaurus word processor document. You can copy and paste this clipart into your own documents. Many different subjects are covered. Important Note: This file is in .ZRF format (.ZRF files are Zaurus Folders). A folder can contain documents, spreadsheets, outlines, etc. To get this into your Zaurus you should download the file to your PC and then hook up your Zaurus to your PC. Use a comms program (Windows 3.1 Terminal program or Windows 95 HyperTerminal program will do) and the Terminal app on your Zaurus to download a folder (in the Terminal app on your Zaurus you click on the "UP/DN" menu and there is an option to download a folder). On your PC you should upload using the X-Modem transfer protocol. Once the transfer has finished you should find the relevant documents in the appropriate application on your Zaurus.

Programming Aids

Are you a PILI programmer? Check out these programming aids that may well save you some valuable time!

  • Character Table gives you a list of all the characters that are available in the Zaurus character map, and displays their internal code values.
  • Key Codes lets you press any key on the Zaurus keyboard and the different key code values for that key are displayed.

PILI Hyper-Text Documents

Using PILI's hyper-text features (also known as Z-Text), it is possible for non-programmers to create their own games and hyper-text documents (Z-Text is fully described in the PILI SDK). Here's a couple to play with:

  • Haunted House is an adventure game where you have to investigate a haunted house and discover its secrets!
  • Cavemate is an adventure game where you walk around a large cave. It is very loosely based on the classic text-based game called Adventure. Written by Richard A. Davis.

Important Note!
The above PILI Hyper-Text links are to .PHT files. Chances are your browser won't know how to handle a .PHT file, and it will just display it on your screen. To save it to your hard disk you should right-click on the link above and select "Save Link As..." When it has downloaded, transfer the file to your Zaurus "PC Files / More" area. These files require the PILI Z-Text program (ZTEXT.BIN) to run. You must install Z-Text on your Zaurus just like any other PILI .BIN program. When you run it you will be shown a list of files from your Zaurus "PC Files / More" area, select the .PHT file you want to run from the file list and it will then start.

Zaurus / PC Linking

The old Zaurus / PC communications software, known as the Zaurus Data Exchange Utility (DEU), that originally came with the Zaurus won't work properly with modern operating systems (i.e. anything later than Windows 98). I get many requests from people asking me to help them connect their Zaurus to their PC, but I don't have any software that will let you do that. For a commercial solution that should work on all operating systems have a look at RuppLynx, which has been kept up-to-date. If you really want to try the old DEU then look at PDAStreet.com

Zaurus Links

Here's a list of other Zaurus web sites. Please let me know if any of the links are dead so I can remove them, or if you know of any other Zaurus web sites.
