CrossMagic for Windows Updates
There are two sorts of updates available for CrossMagic for Windows:
a Program Update and a Materials
Update. A Program Update is a new version of the actual CrossMagic
for Windows program; it usually includes new features and any bug fixes.
A Materials Update adds new materials to the basic set that ships with
CrossMagic for Windows.

CrossMagic for Windows Program Update
The latest version of CrossMagic for Windows is version 4.61, released
October 2003. You can check to see which version you're currently
running by starting up CrossMagic, click on the Help menu
and select the About option. The window
that appears will tell you which version you're currently running. If
you're not running the latest version then you may want to upgrade by downloading
the latest version.
What Has Changed?
V4.10 – June 1998
- Added a new report: Material Usage Report.
- Charts window: Gave a more meaningful message if the user tries to
enter a Material Code without first selecting a Material Type (some
people were confused by the old message and didn't know what to do).
- Charts window: Gave a more meaningful message if the user tries to
enter any Chart Materials without first entering any Chart Details
(some people were confused by the old message and didn't know what
to do).
- All windows: Changed from modal to normal windows so that the user
can switch from one window to another without closing the first window.
V4.20 – September 1998
- Inventory Report: Added a: "Quantity" option. The user
can select either "All" to report on all materials or "Non
Zero Only" to report only on the items that have a quantity (i.e.
items that the user actually has in stock). This makes the report a
lot shorter if you only want to see what's on hand.
- All reports: Removed double-spacing between lines so that more information
can fit on each page.
V4.21 – February 1999
- Material Re-Order Report: Added a sort order so the report now sorts
by Material Type and then Material Code (previously there was no particular
sort order).
- Available Material to Chart Match Report: Added a sort order so the
report now sorts by Chart Number (previously there was no particular
sort order).
- Help: Fixed a problem where the Help menu sometimes couldn't find
the correct help file.
- Menus: Fixed a problem where the correct CrossMagic menu wasn't being
used on all forms and the default Access menu was appearing with options
that aren't applicable to CrossMagic (i.e. Insert Object).
V4.22 – May 1999
- Material Types: Fixed a bug where if the user creates a Material
Type that contains an apostrophe then any part of CrossMagic that attempts
to use that Material Type will stop and produce an error message.
V4.30 – June 1999
- Unfinished Projects Report: Gave the user the option of selecting
to print All Details or Summary Details.
- Help: Added new help items on Upgrades and Frequently Asked Questions.
Also replaced italic text with red text because it's easier to read.
V4.40 – March 2000
- Evenweave Conversion: Changed the Fabric Count from using radio buttons
to being an entry field. This lets the user enter any fabric count
rather than be restricted to just the ones previously available in
CrossMagic.
- Added a new report: Charts. This new report lets the user view all
chart details (including the materials used by that chart) or just
a one-line summary of the chart. The user can also specify the sort
order (Reference, Title or Author) and specify that all charts should
be included in the report or just a range of charts.
V4.50 – April 2000
- Charts Report: Added a new "Sort By" option: Rating.
- Charts window: CrossMagic now remembers the last Material Code used
on a chart and defaults to it when entering new chart materials.
- Inventory Report: Added a "Zero Only" option button to
the "Quantity" option group so the user can select to report
on only materials with a zero quantity (i.e. those that they don't
have any of).
V4.60 – July 2000
- Export Data: This is a new feature that allows the user to export
data from charts, materials, fabrics & tools, or projects. Output
is in a comma delimited ASCII format file. The resulting file can then
be imported into other programs (i.e. databases, spreadsheets, etc).
This means the user can now export their data to a PDA (ie a Palm,
Windows CE or Pocket PC) and take it shopping.
- Chart Search Report: Gave the user the option of printing All Details
or Summary Details.
- Materials: Changed the Re-Order field from a checkbox to a listbox.
This fixes a problem in NVidia video drivers; the checkbox was causing
the video driver to make CrossMagic hang with a "Calculating..." message
in the status line when the user attempted to open the Materials window.
V4.61– October 2003

website.
- Help: Change contact information to point to my new website.
How Do I Install The Updated Version?
- Download the updated version of CrossMagic
for Windows. Important Note! If,
after clicking on this link to download the update, you receive a
message asking if you want to run the program from its current location
or save this program to disk, select the "Save this program
to disk" option. Then click on the Ok button and select a folder
to put the update program in. Remember which folder you put it in!
- Make a backup of your current version just in case something goes
wrong (better safe than sorry!) Copy (don't Move!) the Crossmag.mdb and Data.mdb files
that you will find in the Crossmag directory
on your hard disk to a floppy disk or another directory.
- Run the XMagicUp.exe program from
the folder you downloaded it to. The program will unzip the update
into your Crossmag directory, overwriting
the old Crossmag.mdb file.
- Run CrossMagic for Windows like you normally would.
CrossMagic for Windows Materials Update
Material Updates add new Material Types to your database. You are able
to select which new Material Types you want to add, so if an update has
new Materials Types that you don't want then you don't have to load them.
None of your existing Material Types will be modified in any way, including
any new Material Types you may have added yourself.
- Materials Update #1 – Adds the following Material Types to
your database: Mill Hill Beads, Kreinik #4 Braid, Kreinik #8 Braid
(fine), Caron Wildflowers.
- Materials Update #2 – Adds new DMC colours 3831 through to
3866.

wrong (better safe than sorry!) Copy (don't Move!) the Data.mdb file
that you will find in the Crossmag directory
on your hard disk to a floppy disk or another directory.
- Run the newmats.exe program you downloaded
from the folder you downloaded it to. This will unzip the material

which new Material Types you want to add to your database (the default
is all new types). The updating usually takes just a few seconds. When
finished you can exit the program.
